Fugitive Selves: Fragility, Flight, and Failed Belonging in Tennessee Williams’s the Glass Menagerie and Orpheus Descending
Keywords: Tennessee Williams, outsiders, fragility, flight, alienation, belonging, The Glass Menagerie, Orpheus Descending.
Abstract: This paper examines Tennessee Williams’s representation of the outsider through Laura Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie and Val Xavier in Orpheus Descending. Although Laura withdraws into a private world of glass and Val enters a hostile community as a restless musician, both characters are marked by their inability to inhabit the social roles prepared for them. The study argues that Williams does not treat their difference as a personal defect alone. Instead, he places fragile or fugitive selves within environments governed by commercial utility, gender discipline, social conformity, and patriarchal violence. Laura survives by reducing contact with the world, whereas Val seeks freedom through movement, music, sexuality, and emotional renewal. Their strategies appear opposite, yet both fail because the communities around them permit neither sustained difference nor genuine transformation. Through the glass unicorn, the fire escape, the legless bird, the snakeskin jacket, and the Orpheus myth, Williams converts private vulnerability into dramatic symbols of a larger struggle between individuality and social possession. The paper finally contends that failure in these plays is ethically complex: Laura and Val are defeated in practical terms, but their fragility and resistance expose the moral barrenness of the worlds that defeat them.
