A Pragmatic Analysis of the Discourse of Selected Football Commentaries
Keywords: Pragmatics, discourse, speech acts, football commentaries, context, politeness strategies, deixis.
Abstract: This study conducts a pragmatic analysis of the discourse of selected football commentaries using a qualitative descriptive approach. Drawing on Speech Act Theory, Grice’s Cooperative Principle, and Brown and Levinson’s Politeness Theory, the research examines over twenty televised English-language football commentaries. Transcribed data were analyzed for key pragmatic features, including speech acts, deixis, implicature, and politeness strategies. The findings reveal that commentators frequently employ expressive and directive speech acts, situational deixis, and implicatures to inform, entertain, and engage audiences. Politeness strategies are also used to manage face concerns and modulate judgment. These pragmatic tools collectively enhance the immediacy, coherence, and appeal of live sports commentary. The study contributes to the understanding of sports discourse and highlights the relevance of pragmatic competence in media communication.
