Technological Innovations and Airline Operations: A Narrative Review of Trends, Challenges, and Emerging Opportunities
Keywords: Aviation; Airline Operations; Technological Innovations; Sustainability; Workforce Development; Sustainability.
Abstract: The landscape of the airline industry is significantly changing due to various forces including technological change, market changes, and increased pressures for sustainability. This review consolidates academic research between 2010 and 2024 on key advancements like self-service technologies, advanced data analytics, electric taxiing systems, blockchain technologies, and sociotechnical approaches to artificial intelligence. It examines their combined influence on operational performance, safety, passenger experience, capability of the workforce, and environmental performance. Based on peer-reviewed articles, industry reviews, and pilot project reports, the review shows the development of technology from a supporting role to a fundamental driver of resilience and competitive advantage. It also points out key areas of consumer acceptance, as well as the role of corporate social responsibility and regulatory evolution in making these innovations successful. While there are great opportunities for progress, ongoing issues exist in system integration, cybersecurity compliance, preparedness of the workforce, and coordination of policies. This review highlights these connections with the intention of providing a thorough, yet critical, source for researchers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers who are all concerned with managing the aviation industry within a sustainable and human-centric future.
