The Impact of Cloud Elasticity and Pay as You Go Pricing on Financial Risk and Cost Optimization for Variable Workloads
Keywords: Cloud elasticity, pay as you go pricing, financial risk, cost optimization, variable workloads.
Abstract: This article examines the economic implications of cloud computing for organizations with variable workloads. It explores how inherent elasticity and pay as you go pricing models fundamentally transform financial risk profiles compared to traditional on premises infrastructure. Cloud elasticity addresses the persistent challenge of capacity planning that has historically forced organizations to either overprovision resources, leading to inefficient capital utilization, or underprovision, resulting in performance degradation during demand spikes. The transition from fixed capacity to elastic resources shifts financial risk from capacity planning to consumption management, creating both opportunities and challenges. While cloud computing creates unprecedented alignment between resource utilization and cost, realizing these benefits requires implementing systematic optimization strategies including auto scaling, commitment based purchasing, spot instance utilization, and continuous rightsizing. Moreover, robust governance frameworks incorporating comprehensive cost visibility, advanced forecasting capabilities, and automated policy enforcement are essential for maximizing economic value. This article provides a framework for understanding this fundamental paradigm shift and identifies key strategies for optimizing variable workloads in cloud environments
