Characteristics of Parts of Speech in the Language of Autistic Children Aged 6 – 10 Years (A Case Study in Vietnam)
Keywords: Autism spectrum disorder, child language, parts of speech, vocabulary development, communication, Vietnamese.
Abstract: The age of 6 – 10 years is a period during which children prepare for and attend primary school. By this age, typically developing children have largely developed spoken-language abilities required to acquire knowledge in the school environment. Meanwhile, children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) continue to experience substantial language difficulties, particularly in using a diverse range of parts of speech. This study analyzes the characteristics of parts of speech in the language of children with autism aged 6 – 10 years, compares part-of-speech patterns across different levels of autism severity, compares them with typically developing children, and compares them with autistic children at an earlier developmental stage (3 –6 years). The findings indicate that the language development of autistic children aged 6 – 10 years is significantly delayed relative to that of typically developing children, which affects their acquisition of school knowledge. The study therefore confirms the need for continuous language intervention, particularly the expansion and consolidation of vocabulary across parts of speech, in order to enable children to use language more richly and flexibly in communication and learning.
