Strengthening Character Values through Church Choir Activities at the Gpm Bethel Congregation

Keywords: Character Education; Church Choir; Spirituality; GPM Bethel; Music Ministry.

Abstract: This study aims to analyze the strengthening of character values through church choir activities at the Protestant Church of Maluku (GPM) Bethel Congregation. Within the context of church ministry, choir activities are not merely artistic expressions or liturgical complements, but also function as instruments for character formation, spiritual growth, and social interaction among members of the congregation. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving choir members, conductors, church administrators, and congregational leaders. The findings indicate that church choir activities contribute significantly to the development of important character values, including discipline, responsibility, cooperation, solidarity, humility, and spiritual awareness. Discipline was cultivated through regular rehearsals, punctuality, and commitment to achieving musical harmony collectively. Responsibility emerged from participants’ understanding of choir ministry as a form of service to God and the congregation. Furthermore, collaborative musical experiences strengthened social solidarity, emotional connectedness, and mutual respect among choir members. Participation in choir activities also enhanced participants’ spiritual lives through worship songs, prayer practices, and involvement in diaconal ministry. This study concludes that church choir ministry can serve as an effective medium for character education by integrating musical, spiritual, social, and cultural dimensions within congregational life.
