Making the Best Use of IoT Systems and Leveraging Docker for Developer Productivity

Keywords: Internet of Things, Docker containerization, microservices architecture, edge computing, stream processing.

Abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT) represents a transformative technological paradigm connecting countless devices across industries while generating massive data volumes. Despite its potential, IoT development faces significant challenges, including scalability, interoperability, and deployment complexity. This paper proposes Docker containerization as a strategic solution to enhance developer productivity by encapsulating IoT services within portable runtime environments. The architectural components essential for robust IoT platforms are examined, including messaging protocols, message brokers, stream processing frameworks, specialized databases, and API gateways. Through a detailed case study of a containerized fire monitoring system, the paper demonstrates how this approach enables efficient development across sensor, gateway, data ingestion, processing, storage, and presentation layers. The benefits of containerization include development efficiency gains, operational advantages, and improved system resilience, while best practices for implementation address optimization, health monitoring, security, and version control. The containerized approach significantly reduces development cycle time, simplifies testing, streamlines deployment, and enhances system scalability while maintaining security and performance across heterogeneous environments. Furthermore, the integration of containerization with existing IoT infrastructure demonstrates remarkable adaptability across diverse industrial contexts, enabling seamless migration paths from legacy systems while preserving critical functionality and establishing standardized deployment patterns that accelerate innovation cycles without compromising operational stability.
