Next-Generation ERP Interoperability in Healthcare: Bridging Cloud, AI, and Legacy Systems
Keywords: Healthcare interoperability, Enterprise resource planning, API-led integration, Artificial intelligence, Data governance.
Abstract: This scholarly article explores the evolution of enterprise resource planning (ERP) interoperability in healthcare environments, addressing the complex challenges of integrating legacy systems with emerging cloud-based and AI-driven technologies. The investigation begins by tracing healthcare IT's transformation from isolated departmental systems to interconnected digital ecosystems, highlighting persistent interoperability barriers despite decades of standardization efforts. Modern integration architecture paradigms—including API-led connectivity, event-driven architecture, cloud-native middleware, and Integration Platform as a Service—are evaluated for their effectiveness in healthcare contexts. The article extends to artificial intelligence applications in healthcare integration, examining AI-assisted data mapping, robotic process automation, smart agents, and natural language processing for unstructured data integration. Through detailed case studies from academic medical centers, multi-site healthcare systems, and research hospitals, successful integration patterns and implementation strategies are identified. The article concludes with an assessment of governance frameworks, security architectures, and emerging technologies—including blockchain and next-generation interoperability standards—that promise to reshape healthcare ERP integration in the coming years
