Intelligent Automation in BPM: The Role of Agentic AI
Keywords: Intelligent automation, Agentic artificial intelligence, Process orchestration, Autonomous decision-making, Human-AI collaboration.
Abstract: This article examines the transformative impact of Agentic Artificial Intelligence on Business Process Management (BPM). As organizations navigate increasingly complex, volatile business environments, traditional process management approaches face limitations in adaptability and intelligence. Agentic AI emerges as a pivotal advancement, introducing autonomous decision-making capabilities into business processes. Unlike conventional automation, this article demonstrates autonomy, adaptability, intentionality, and social intelligence, enabling dynamic orchestration rather than static execution. The integration creates a paradigm shift in how organizations conceptualize and manage workflows, with agentic systems continuously learning from execution data and environmental feedback. Implementation requires a multi-layered framework addressing process intelligence, agent design, orchestration mechanisms, human-AI collaboration interfaces, governance structures, and evolutionary management. Applications span the entire BPM lifecycle from process discovery to optimization, with transformative results across industries from insurance claims handling to supply chain orchestration. Organizations face technical, organizational, ethical, and strategic challenges despite promising advantages. The evolution continues toward advanced agent architectures, process-centric organizational structures, and convergence with adjacent technologies like quantum computing, IoT, blockchain, and extended reality interfaces, fundamentally reimagining the relationship between human workers, artificial intelligence, and organizational processes.
