Beyond Conventional Myths: Reimagining Shakti and Lilith Across Cultures
Keywords: Shakti, Lilith, mythology, feminine power, gender roles, Hinduism, Judaism, comparative analysis, divine feminine
Abstract: This research paper explores the intriguing similarities and differences between two powerful female figures from Hindu and Judeo-Christian mythologies: Shakti and Lilith. Shakti is a primordial cosmic energy and the personification of divine feminine power in Hinduism. While Lilith is often depicted as a demoness or a dark deity in Jewish folklore. Despite their differing cultural and religious contexts, both Shakti and Lilith embody strong, independent, and assertive aspects of femininity, challenging traditional gender roles and expectations. The paper begins by providing an overview of the mythological backgrounds of Shakti and Lilith, discussing their origins, characteristics, and roles within their respective mythologies. It then delves into the comparative analysis, highlighting key similarities and differences between the two figures. One significant similarity is their association with primal energy, representing the aspects of female power. However, their narratives diverge in terms of their relationships with male counterparts and their roles in creation myths. Furthermore, the paper examines the cultural and societal implications of these myths. It also explores the ways in which these myths have been interpreted and reinterpreted over time, reflecting evolving cultural attitudes towards gender and power. By comparing Shakti and Lilith, this research paper aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the diverse representations of feminine power and agency in mythology, highlighting the universal themes and enduring relevance of these ancient stories.
