Abstract

Climate change and environmental degradation are among the most pressing challenges facing Nigeria and the world today. They have significant impacts on the security and development of the nation, affecting its socio-economic, political and ecological dimensions. This paper examines the causes, consequences and responses to these phenomena, with a focus on their implications for national security and development in Nigeria. It argues that climate change and environmental degradation pose serious threats to the stability, prosperity and well-being of the Nigerian people, as well as to the regional and global peace and order. It also suggests that effective adaptation and mitigation strategies are needed to address these challenges, requiring a holistic, multi-sectoral and multi-level approach that involves all stakeholders, including the government, civil society, private sector and international community. The paper concludes by highlighting some of the best practices and recommendations for enhancing Nigeria’s resilience and capacity to cope with the effects of climate change and environmental degradation
